That wasn't the worst idea I've ever seen, I've done a lot worse myself, but we really need to take the time period into consideration too.
Having 12 hours to pick between 8am and 8pm isn't that bad. Having 12 hours to pick between 8pm and 8am really is. It wouldn't be that bad if we knew when it was coming, but sometimes owners take unpredictable amounts of time to select. One night having 3 guys ahead of you means you're safe until tomorrow, another time it means you've timed out before you wake up the next day.

Yeah. I agree. First time I have ever timed out. Pick was made at 9 pm EST last night and was timed out by the time I woke up today.

It's easily understandable. But that is why we strongly suggest owners to submit list picks in advance. That way, they're sure they won't time out, and if the list is made properly, it ensures the team will get a player it wanted in the first place.
Drafts have slowed down way too much in the third and fourth rounds in the past, and it was getting worst every season. In fact, didn't we have to pause the season just a couple of seasons ago in order to finish the fourth round? And we've come close, too close, on some other occasions.
Submitting lists works for the owners that do it. It not only speeds up the draft, but it keeps them in the draft as they don't even come close to timing out.

Yeah, I mean we can see how doing free agency and the draft helps when it comes to getting through the draft in time, but until then, 12 hours has to stay, because the drafts have just come to a halt in Rounds 3 and 4 in the past few seasons.
Owners have much less interest in those rounds and for whatever reason a lot of them decide they want to make the pick themselves only to time out 18 hours later. I can understand the concern with 8pm to 8am, but like Terry said, submit a list.
It isn't that difficult to make a list that is 5 or 6 players long. I receive these lists from several owners as does Terry, and it makes things go much quicker.

I'm pretty sure we haven't had to hold the sim since before I left the league back in the early 70s, but I can't account for the time I was away. I don't think anyone would expect you to change it for this draft. Next season and next draft though, it needs to be changed. This is supposed to be fun. For non-competing team owners it's the only fun part of the season.

Perhaps we should re-visit my idea of expanding the "notice" from the next team to the next 3 teams, that way with the shorter time-out period, it is less likely that owners would be taken by surprise that their pick has come up.

I'm pretty sure we haven't had to hold the sim since before I left the league back in the early 70s, but I can't account for the time I was away. Of course not. Until 1970, the entire draft counted 3 rounds and for a large part of the 60s there were 6 less teams than today. Right after the switch, the draft extended to 6 rounds. We didn't have to hold sims back then because, for the first few seasons after the switch, the honeymoon was working and most people were still pretty excited to draft in rounds 3 and 4. I also believe there may have been more talent in the draft back then with the 2k8 than there has been since the draft to the 2k10. But the honeymoon has long been over. Round 3 and 4 began slowing down in the second half of the 70s. And things have not improved since. They won't, unless something is done about it.

Let me rephrase what I said because you got lost in telling me about league history during the time I was running the league and missed what I was saying.
Has there been a time since early in version 2k8 when we got the in-season draft dumped on us that we've had to delay running the next regularly scheduled sim because the draft wasn't finished yet?
I remember that it happened in one of the first few seasons, but it hasn't happened since I came back in mid 1979. There were several times when people posted they were afraid it would happen, but it didn't. That I remember.

I think it happened around 1977 or 1978, but I'd have to check about that. The thing is, from the mid-70s on, it frequently happened that with just a few days before reaching the draft in the file, we would still have the entire fourth round to go and sometimes even a large portion of the third. In fact, in one season in particular, we strongly suggested that owners opt back in for a list pick, and several owners such as myself and others did so simply to speed things up. It is sad that we need to take such measures only because there is a marked lost of interest from so many owners when it comes to rounds 3 and 4.

Our last draft in OSML was "on the clock" from June 8 through June 25th. A few picks were actually made on the 7th before the clock started ticking. I don't think it helps speed up the picking process, it just gives everybody an extra week to complete the draft. Instead of waiting for free agency to end, there were actually draft picks made before free agency started.

Part of that has to be alleviated if we don't spend 7 - 10 days doing nothing but free agency (which is getting changed for next season). Another part of that could be alleviated if we changed the game files so that 70% of the players worth having weren't pitchers to be drafted by teams already swimming in seas of pitchers. By round 2 you either draft a RP or a very long long-shot position player that you'll probably just release in a few seasons. Our last draft in OSML was "on the clock" from June 8 through June 25th. I already email two teams myself, got into the habit with OSML and did it all of the last draft here as well, and I can't see that it makes a difference.

well, it just did for me. Last pick sent out e-mails to the next three GM's and I've already sent in my list of the 3 players I would want with my next pick knowing that I could probably go on the clock tonight around 11.
