The advancement of the game file to April 1 prior to the start of Free Agency was done for very specific reasons this offseason, however I am thinking that this may be a change to consider making permanent.
Having the draft start coencide with Free Agency gives us extra time in a period of generally high activity in the league so it should speed up the draft process, at least for the first round or two.
It also gives GM's time to get some scouting info on the draft and make good informed decisions in both the draft and free agency.
Any thoughts?

I am in favor of moving the file to April 1 before free agency starts permanently.
Many players have rating changes between the end of one season and April of the next, especially the older, out-of-peak players that are so common in free agency. By using the April 1 file to evaluate the free agents, you get a better idea of what you'll have for the season.

I agree that we have better idea of the rating but we will lose some players to retirement between November and April. It have to be considered

I agree that we have better idea of the rating but we will lose some players to retirement between November and April. It have to be considered I was afraid of that too when it was decided we'd do it this season, so I advanced the turnover file to March and then April. I counted 100 hitters in the FA pool in the turnover file, and there was again 100 in the March 1 file and again on April 1. I didn't repeat the exercise for pitchers, but I have to admit I was kind of surprised no one retired. On a previous game version, probably the 2k8, the free agent pool lost a lot of players when we advanced a file ahead like that. One thing that makes me wonder is does the absence of spring training for these players have an impact on them? Probably not, but with an odd game like this one, can we really be sure?

I can probably find a thread on the SM forums to confirm this, but spring training really only affects pre-peak players and pitchers (for coaching or "teaching") I say that if we make this move, that there is a pause so that teams can set their spring training rosters to maximize player development prior to the opening of FA and the start of the draft.

Just throwing in my 2 cents....
Personally I would rather see free agency start prior to spring training, it adds another level of strategy to being a GM. It's also more like real world baseball that way.
It also might be a little overwhelming for some GM's to plan out their lineup for a new season, scout/acquire FAs and keep an eye on the ongoing draft.

There might be one or two disadvantages to doing this, but I think letting owners see their teams' projected finances before starting FA bidding is good for the league. I felt like owners were a bit more conservative in their bidding this season when we were all able to see how many teams were looking at deep red profit projections.
It also gives owners more time to test ticket prices and trade players they need to get rid of to avoid bankruptcy. At least the ones who're paying attention.

Sure would have been nice to start the rookie draft along with FA, so it isn't so stressed to try to get it in...or at least be able to scout the rookies out while people are bidding on FA...after all, FA isn't the big deal it was many, many years ago. Anymore, the main thing in FA is picking up a few bench players.

The feeling I got last year though when this was brought up was some people liked it, some people didn't. But I would be all for putting this to a league vote when I get back this weekend unless someone else wants to start the thread now.

How about this as a plan. The game file gets advanced to March 1 prior to the opening of free agency (so we would go from the world series to March 1 prior to FA opening. Teams could then post re-signings at the March 1 cost while they are looking at the available free agents. Then, when FA opens up, the file is advanced to April 1 and the draft can begin?
Does this sound like a plan that could work?

Yeah, that sounds pretty much like what we are going to do. I will likely keep it at Turnover for a couple days though just in case the prices are slightly different and people want to sign them.
But yeah, overall, that is how it will work.

But yeah, overall, that is how it will work. How about we just completely skip Nov and March so we'll have enough time to restore draft rounds 3 and 4 to 18 hours, or at least 18 hours for periods that include 8pm-8am? I think ending up with list picks of players that everyone skipped almost 60 times by the beginning of round 3 is a bigger deal to owners than not saving 500k a season on a contract renewal.

List picks aren't as bad as they used to be. Players such as Bert Roberge, Lee Smith and many others happen to be pretty solid players. I've seen teams make a trade in order to be able to select right before the next team enlisted for a list pick only so they could select the very player that this list pick was going to be.
In fact, several list picks over the years (since we got rid of that suckers list pick from long ago) have been better picks than some teams are able to make on their own. ;D

I guess you weren't here yet when teams that timed out used to get the worst possible pick, and we do mean, the worst possible. A few teams suffered through a whole bunch of players that didn't even have enough talent to sell ice cream in the stands...

We don't need a March 1 stopping point if that means we'll allocate less time from April 1 to opening day to compensate for it.

^^^ that used to be true... but not it seems like the last 2 or 3 seasons the list picks are RP that are 70/80 's or SP with horrible command and high endurance thus propping up their scouting list score...

I think that some people are missing the main point of my post regarding the file advancement and the offseason schedule. We already pause between the world series and the opening of free agency, this is usually at a date (in game) of Novemeber 9. What I am proposing is to advance the game file to March 1 for this pause, then advance the game to April 1 to coincide with the opening of Free Agency.
Perhaps others think that the game should be advanced to April 1 prior to the start of Free Agency, and that idea may have some merit. I for one like to have the two dates (March 1 and April 1) to test out the difference in cost for signing a contract extension for my players - but that is just a preference, not a need.
I do see how going from the World Series directly to April 1 would give owners plenty of time to prepare for the draft and may also help to speed up the drafting process.

I I do see how going from the World Series directly to April 1 would give owners plenty of time to prepare for the draft and may also help to speed up the drafting process. I don't see how it would help speed up the draft. The first two rounds usually go by pretty well. It is during rounds 3 and 4 that everything slows down incredibly. If we went to April 1, the only way we would have "more time" for the draft would be the fact that, by holding free agency on April 1, round 1 and maybe even round 2 would be over by the time free agency is over, therefore giving us the entire months of April and May to finish up the draft. But owners who tend to slow down starting in round 3 would still slow down no matter what. We could also be wrong about this. It is possible that holding free agency at the same time than the draft would somehow divide the owner's attention or free time, and because of it, rounds 1 and 2 wouldn't take place as fast as they usually do. If that was to be the case, what would be the point? We'd be stuck more or less with the same problems if, say, we still have 3 full rounds to go by the time the season starts.

It would allow more time, Terry, that's all. How owners chose to use that time, who knows? In OSML we have guys timing out same as they do here, but we don't only have one week or less from the time we get the amateur draft listed and the first sim of the season. Huh? You mean divide the owners attention more than having them trying to run their teams while we're doing the draft?

This is a reminder that we are only going to be at the Turnover file for a couple of days following by a couple of days at the March 1st file before moving to April 1st and opening up free agency and getting the draft started at the same time.
Also, Rounds 3 and 4 will be allowed to move back to 18 hours under this new system because we should have plenty of time.
More details on the offseason schedule will be e-mailed when the Turnover File is posted tomorrow.
