The following quote is from the DP post thread: Starting next season, a team who times out will not only get list picks the rest of the current year draft, but will also get list picks for the following year's draft as well. That's a bit extreme, don't you think? One owner, one brand new owner, missed one pick, the only person to time out this season, and we need a rule that anyone who can't get to his computer one time in a draft has to settle for list picks for the entire next season's draft? I could understand if it was an owner with a history of missing picks, or maybe if a Lot of people were timing out, but as written this is much too harsh.

I may revise it a bit before next season, but it will be something along those lines. We have actually had two teams time out in the draft: Tigers and Rangers. The Tigers just wasn't publicized as they did make a pick and then about 2 other people had make picks before I was able to get on, so I allowed the Tigers to keep the pick. They didn't have any picks left, but were informed if they acquired one, it would result in a list pick.
If I am to revise it, it will be along the lines of forced list picks for the 3rd and 4th round of the following draft as this is where most time outs occur.
There are a couple of owners who historically time out or get really really close to timing out. That is why this has been considered for a while (even before I was commish). Having two more teams time out this year, I am just going to throw this out there and see how it goes.
I tend to agree that penalizing a team's 1st and 2nd rounder in the following season is probably too harsh given that the most interest is in those rounds, but maybe a 3rd and 4th will be good enough.

I usually dont say much in controversial issues but here goes. We are all busy students Fathers employes or business owners. Me I am a Husband Father of of a high school Athelete (Wrestling- Lacrosse and Cross Country)and teacher. Besides my day classes I also teach night classes a couple of times a week. Last seasons draft was most likely my worst because I was too busy to really study like I usually do I made quick picks to keep from timeing out and also from slowing the draft down. Maybe we could do a three strikes rule on timing out. We do not want to scare owners out of the league but we do want owners to be active.

That penalty is far too harsh. List picks in the 3rd and 4th rounds for the next season sounds good though. Thats when I see a lot of owners time out because they don't care about those rounds anyways. That way they dont have to think about it and we wont have to worry about it.
That being said, forcing a team into list picks in for the entire next draft is insanity. You can't just dole out crippling penalties for things like that just because they are annoying.

I agree. Something needs to be done to encourage owners to be considerate and not make the rest of us wait 18 hours if they really don't care who they get in the late rounds.
Getting list picks for the 3rd and 4th rounds the next year seems reasonable although it really isn't much of a penalty. This isn't like the old days when the list pick came from the bottom of the list rather than the top.
Thanks to Terry of the Expos, who when he found that he wouldn't be able to make his 4th round pick in time, rather than just letting it time out, set a good example by letting us know that he'd take a list pick.

Maybe we could do a three strikes rule on timing out. We do not want to scare owners out of the league but we do want owners to be active. I like this idea a lot, even for the modified penalty (rounds 3 and 4 only). It gets repeat offenders and doesn't hurt owners who are usually reliable, but have an unexpected last minute problem one season. Even two strikes would work, if you think three is too much. We also need to remember the penalty is to the owner, not the team. If an owner leaves the league, the penalty goes away. If he changes teams, it follows him to the new team. What if it's a temporary caretaker missing a pick for the open team he's minding? If the penalty would be applied to his real team, he might set the open team down to list picks to avoid the chance of getting a penalty. The list we use now is a whole lot better than what we did in the past, but it's still not great.

we made it through the fourth round, we should be happy...lol, but it is annoying when a team times out, but stuff happens to all of us. Maybe we should make iphones mandatory for all owners
