The 2k8 Play by Play mode offers new possibilities that weren't offered in the 2k4 dinosaur mode.
Both owners manage: It might be a little more complicated, it might be slower a little bit, but it could be quite a show.
How could it work? Of course, both owners would need to be at the Netmeeting. Both of them would need to send me their strategies secretly (using the one-on-one PM on Netmeeting). The team on the mound would go first, then the team at bat would get to decide what they do. This would probably need to be tested first, to see how efficient or how slow it makes the game, but it's something I cannot refuse to consider.
PROS:
- No more stupid AI decision like pinch-hitting for the starting pitcher in the 2nd inning of a 0-0 ballgame
- It offers the possibility of using such strategies as double-switch
- You get to choose the replacement player of your choice (PH, reliever, etc...)
- It would make the games more exciting
CONS:
- Not every owner can show up
- Some owners could have too much of an advantage over others at managing a game
- It would make a 7 game series last quite some time
Then, is it something we'd still want to allow if, say, only one owner shows up?
Only home team can manage: Whether the 2 owners show up or only one of them, this mode would make the game a little faster than the previous mode because only one owner would need to tell me of his decisions during the game. I would constantly tell the AI to "Hit" or "Pitch" for the road team.
PROS:
- Make the game a little faster
- Give the team at home some kind of a home advantage
CONS:
- The team starting on the road could have a real disadvantage
- The best-of-3 series played in the Divisionnal Series would disadvantage the favored team which has to start on the road for the first 2 games
Leave it in General Manager mode: It would be exactly as it is now in the 2k4: we watch the game, but don't interfere with it.
PROS:
- The fastest of the 3 modes proposed here
- It ensures that no one is at a disadvantage against the other
CONS:
- It allows the AI to screw you up with such amazing decisions as: Intentional Walk with the bases loaded, Runners getting you out of a game trying to reach his triple into an inside-the-park homerun, PH for your ace in the 2nd inning, having your cleanup hitter bunt, having a slow runner try to steal third, leaving a reliever to bat, PH with the worst possible hitter on your bench, etc, etc, etc... For more information on the strategies that can screw you up, please ask Scott, Rand, Mosko, Dave, etc...
- It is sooo 2k4...
