Mike McQueen's exceptional season almost lead to a unanimous choice for the 1979 AL Cy Young award. The Red Sox ace received 20 of the 21 first-place votes to earn the honors. The only other first-place votes went to McQueen's teammate, Buzz Stephen.

The domination of Reds SP Rick Williams lead to his easy nomination as the 1979 Cy Young award winner. Williams obtained 16 first-place votes to finish way ahead of runner-up Jack Morris who had the other 5 first-place votes.
