For the last ten years the twins have usually relied on young players to help propel their offense. It seems every year there is a new talented young guy that comes up mid season. Tony Phillips, Von Hayes, Phil Bradley have been perfect examples of that.
But with the Twins trading most draft picks away for elite talent in an effort to win it all, there was no marquee minor league prospect to come up in the minors this year and make a huge impact.
Pre season favorites by most, the twins were struggling for most of this year. After a sub .500 May (13-15) Twins management knew something had to be done. Trades were explored, and veteran Bucky Dent was almost acquired. The twins were stumped and figured they would have to hope their hitters would get out of their slump. But they didnt, so the Twins called the representatives of 39 year old Joe Lahoud, and 40 year old Mike Lum. Both players were excited to hear that they would have one more baseball season in them. Mike Lum is also searching for his first world series title, and is one home run shy of the 300 HR club. Also signed with them was 31 year old SP Rick Matula
The press ridiculed the twins, and asked if they were trying what the 2010 Reds did (i dont know how they knew about the future ). People compared Joe Lahoud to Edmonds and Rick Matula as Russ Springer.
Yet so far the results have looked genius. Lum's batting average is .324 and his OPS is over 900. He has also started at catcher 4 games, and has thrown out 100% of runners trying to steal. Lahoud's OBP is .395 and scored 11 runs in just 69 at bats. Matula is 2-1 in 4 games started.
**** now that i wrote this article, all of these old guys are going start playing how they should lol. i hate jinxing myself
