On June 7, 1983 the Twins signed a little known pitcher named Joel Mckeon. Mckeon is 20 and was drafted in the fifth round by the Phillies. The Phillies cut him with a career era around 4.00 between Rookie and single A. The Twins signed him to a 2.8 Million dollar contract over the next 7 years. After a half of season in the Twins minors his peak has skyrocketed to 95 and and overall of 71. He has three years before he hits his peak and it will be interesting to see how well his overall progression will continue. When asked Mckeon what the difference was from last season to this season he responded, " In high school my best ball pitched was when I started, and for some reason MLB scouts that I was a reliever. But really I have no real power, only topping out at 91 MPH. Being a starter lets me use my control to my advantage." The Twins are hoping he can be a #2 or #3 in the rotation some day. The GM compares him to Barry Zito, as they are both leftys and heavily rely on their devastating curve.

Dude, in 1983, Barry Zito was 5 years old. If your gm is hanging around unknown 5 year old kids trying to find "curves", I'm afraid you may want to point him out to the vice squad.
