(AP - Baltimore)
After a recent published report left little hope for the fans of baseball in Baltimore, the GM has come under fire. There has been talk that the team should be rebuilding. To be honest no one expected the O's to make the playoffs this season coming off a disappointing 1981 campaign. But, with a closer look at the early season results there may yet be hope for the beleagured O's.
As of May15 the O's (20-19) find themselves 2 games behind 2nd place Boston(22-17) and only 3 games behind the division leading Tigers(23-16). Now, let's look closer.
Detroit has played 25 of it's first 39 games against .500 or lower opponents. Boston has played an incredible 29 of it's first 39 games against teams that are exactly .500 or worse.
Here's where it gets interesting for the Baltimore faithful. The Orioles have played only 16 of their 39 games against those same teams. Now for the kicker--in head-to-head match-ups the O's have won BOTH series, taking 2 of 3 from the Tigers and the BoSox.
So, with all of that being said, O's fans should keep their heads up. According to the numbers, there's no reason to count them out yet.
