This was discussed before, and we are now adopting an offical rule concerning retiring players. In the 2k8, players are now going to retire anytime during the season. This happens to veterans even if they are on the major league roster, on the bench or in the minor leagues. Such a thing would open the door for certain kind of abuse that we will be countering by putting up this rule: If a player who is in the rotation, bullpen or starting lineup (either lineup) retires: the team doesn't have to pay anything. If a hitter on the bench retires: the team has to pay 25% of the remaining total contract value. If a player in the minors retires: the team has to pay 50% of the remaining total contract value.
This will avoid having teams signing every player in sight so that no one else gets them and simply keep them on his bench or in his minor league in all impunity. Teams will have to think twice before signing a player that they don't really need or don't need at all. I will be keeping track to the retirements and will probably post the names of the retired players after each sim is run. This rule will be official starting in the 1970 season.

What we want to avoid is having team sign star players, everyday players, at very expensive contracts and not play them everyday, either by leaving them in the minors or on the bench, and doing so only so other teams don't get those players.
Or owners signing players to expensive long term contracts then trying force retirement later on because the guy didn't stay at the top of the league as long as was hoped, or the team got an equal or better player for less.
Players retire much too easily in this version, and will keep doing it even after our first 2k8 season is in the books. It won't be anywhere near as bad in '71 and beyond, but pride retirements are not going away either.
In 2k4 I liked having good veterans stored on the bench or in the minors for when the sim engine decided one of my starters was going to wipe out for a season or two, but in 2k4 once a player was signed he stayed in the game until age 45 no matter where he played.
In 2k8, they're almost as likely to retire because of being benched as they are if they're put into the rookie leagues.

so if the player retires, the team is not on the hook for the amount, or the team still owes the remainder of the contract?
