Starting off as defending champs, the Minnesota Twins are currently tied for second place. They had an interesting off season as their blockbuster trade of moving cecil cooper and ken schrom for payroll relief was denied by MLB's offices. Cooper and Schrom both had replacement, 2nd year Tim Pynarski and 2nd RP Ramon Pena. Since the trade fell through, and the Mets were not willing to re-work the deal, the Twins moved ahead.

Anyhow the Twins bid 10 million on 5 years with the thinking that they would retract the bid if the phillies didnt bump it. The twins thought this was a sure thing as WS contenders did not have a second baseman. Well due to real world work, the twins did no rescind their bid and are now stuck with Garner's 10 million a year salary. He's currently projected as starting at 2b against lefties and being a super sub against righties. This was the only major signing of FA, with the other two being a pitcher, McGaughlin to round out the pitching staff, and Reggie Jackson for some nostalgia.
With the garner signing some are comparing the Twins to the modern day Yanks. The Twins are happy with that as that means they win ball games and more importantly championships.
For those that keep taking shots that the Twins will fall into bankrupcy...Im the guy that signed over the hill Roy White to a 31 million dollar 2 year deal. I gave 22 million over 3 years to an out of peak BILL RUSSELL!!!! Thats 66 million over threeeeeeeee years. My teams have always have had expensive players, but yet i make it work. I have 31.5 Million coming off the books. Thats a lot of money.
I look long term, and some years you can spend extra if you know in a couple of years coming up that you will be making bank with low salaries.
BTW I'm an economist who graduated from a top 20 school in that field. I think I know what im talking about when it comes spending cash and how it results to the small and big picture. ;D But then again the Federal Reserve offered me a job, so maybe I dont know what im talking about ;D
