Posting a comment would be helpful. We'll probably re-poll the top two choices. No date has been set yet. You can look at version information by clicking on the names (2kX) below. 2k8 - $24.95 to download, $29.95 + shipping if by mail order 2k7 - $19.95 (+ shipping if by mail order) 2k6 - free to download Nothing earlier than 2k6 is available at the web site anymore, and wouldn't help us anyway. 2k8 is not going to be free next year. At best it'll go down to $19.95 and it's possible that 2k7 will either be free or cost $10. I wouldn't expect either to go down until after February. 2k6 is free now, but its also two years old, has two more recent versions ahead of it, and probably wouldn't help us much with filling teams. I agree with everyone who said that getting friends to play is the best way to go, but I've only gotten two referrals in the last several months, and one of them changed his mind.

I vote for 2007 because I have used it in a league for four seasons and found it to be better than 2K4 in every way and better than 2K6 in almost every way. The remaining bugs in 2K7 are mildly annoying at worst. And of course I already own it, so the cost is not an issue for me.
Beyond all of the issues that have been voiced about 2K4, what I hate about it the worst is the inevitable decline in the performance of players even when they're still in peak and when their predicted performances have not changed. That seems to have been corrected in 2K7. Players have the usual ups and downs from year to year that real players have.

2k8 is just a better version of 2k7, so i think going with 2k7 would be retarded personally

I vote 2K8, because a newer version should have the most kinks worked out.
I also say we should make the switch pretty soon.

I vote 2K8, why not make the big leap. I played with it for a while this weekend ( The Game 2K8 ) and it seems fine to me. I do like the righty lefty lineups.

I do want to go on record as to say I would prefer to stay with 2K4, but it seems a switch is inevitable that is why I voted for 2K8.

I will second the Cardinals motion, although I've never "played with it"

I don't mind the 2006 version but do not like the 2007 version. Unless there is a free version of 2008 I can't afford to buy it and try it out to make a decison on that
Personally I think the 2005 version is the best one out there of all the versions I have played

I voted for 2k7 because it is cheaper and appears to have all the goodies we need. Many of the improvements for 2k8 don't seem to effect play very much. I haven't played either, so I will defer to those who have.

Interesting results so far. I wouldn't have expected this.
I'm sure there's nothing I could say that would stop owners who can afford the new version from sharing it with friends who can't.

I'm sure there's nothing I could say that would stop owners who can afford the new version from sharing it with friends who can't. Exactly. Oh dear. Let me add that doing this would be illegal, immoral, and just plain wrong on so many levels. It cheats Clay out of the money he (rightfully!) makes from making a patch getting an old version to finally work right, then calling it a new version and selling the patch to us . I mean selling the new version to us.

I bought the 2k8 version and it looks nice to me. You can open many windows at once (unlike 2k4). I like that we can see the players' overall ratings. I really like this version.

I'm happy with the version we are running, haven't bought 2008, not sure if I even will buy it. Definitely not a fan of 2007, seems like the more they try to add to the game, the worse they make it. One thing that would definitely make a decision for me would be the roster size! Would not participate in another league that is full of AAA, AA and A rosters, just too many players. Will commit to play the game with the 2004 version, won't commit to play with a different version at this point. Haven't voted.

Different tastes for different people. The expanded minor-league roster is one of my favorite features of 2K7 and presumably 2K8. I like being able to see guys develop, moving them up a notch when they seem ready or releasing them if they don't seem likely to amount to anything.
I suppose you could just release the lower minor-leaguers if you didn't want to mess with them.

Definitely not a fan of 2007, seems like the more they try to add to the game, the worse they make it. Yep, that's where my comment about the next version being a patch to the previous one came from. New features added to one version of the game usually take one or two more version releases to work right. One thing that would definitely make a decision for me would be the roster size! Would not participate in another league that is full of AAA, AA and A rosters, just too many players. This comment confuses me. I know why a commissioner wouldn't be thrilled with teams having a large minor league system, but I don't understand why it would annoy an owner that much. The roster size would definitely need to be expanded; it takes a minimum of 3 to 5 seasons before draft picks are anywhere near ready for the pro team. In many cases, half the pro team would be ready to retire by the time a few of the new players can move up.

It probably would be decided if we could actually get more owners to vote for once in their life.

I have a concern. How can we ask owners to "lock" in players on a protected list for an upcoming expansion, when we are considering a switch in versions? If I understand this correctly, players performances have the potential of being very differant than they are under the 04 version. I would suggest that if we do in fact switch, that these owners are allowed to alter their protected list.

for real, we should just take a two week break or whatever and then get back to this season with all the protected lists and what not, seems like a waste of time to do it now

so is this decided? are we switching? if so when? Very close to being decided, but when we switch is still not certain. 2k8 still isn't even fully patched yet, they'll be working on getting the bugs out for at least another two months, and everything they change can alter player performance. I'll be posting more about that and other timetable considerations in another thread soon. It probably would be decided if we could actually get more owners to vote for once in their life. Actually we've done well this time. 18 owners total and only four votes haven't been cast yet: Terry and I have abstained so far to see what everyone else wants and I think one of the two remaining non voting owners is away on vacation. Switching versions doesn't change the fact the we're all protecting players based on what we think they can do, not what we know they can do. We make our best guesses and hope the AI doesn't smack us around too badly. The intention is to keep all player performances as close as possible from this version to the next, which is one of the reasons why I'm not encouraging the idea that we make an immediate jump. We'll need to test them in the new version for at least three seasons to get a fair idea of what's going to happen to them. Once we see how they're effected, we can tweak and fine tune ratings and predictions as needed. There will be several other things that we'll have to test and smooth out before we move the league onto 2k(8?). Again, I'll be addressing all the things that I already know about in another thread, and asking other owners to add their own observations. Patience is the key right now; we can do this fast, or we can try to do it right.
